Message from the Conference Chairs
Welcome to the Fifth International ICST Conference on Heterogeneous Networking for Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness (QShine). QShine 2008 will be held on 28-31, July 2008 at Eaton Hotel in Hong Kong. Following the successful QShine conferences in the previous years, QShine 2008 continues to focus on the research challenges associated with the design and implementation of large-scale wired and wireless networks and distributed systems. It is very delighted that our conference has two very prominent members of the networking community to deliver keynote speeches: Professor Vijay K. Bhargava from University of British Columbia and Professor Yi-Bing Lin from National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan.
The soul of any conference is the technical program. We would like to express our special thanks to Qian Zhang and Ekram Hossain, the Program Co-chairs. Our Technical Program Committee have assembled a top-notch technical program consisting of fifty-one papers, which are further organized in two parallel tracks. A nice panel session will also be organized during the conference to discuss a very insightful topic on ''Next-Generation Wireless Networking: Opportunities and Challenges''. All the conference participants will also be able to involve in in-depth discussions in the four post-conference workshops, covering a wide range of topics including Connecting Health, Dynamic Networks, Artificial Intelligence in Grid Computing, and Fiber-Wireless Integration for Broadband Access.
We would like to thank the volunteer efforts of all the Workshop Chairs, TPC members and reviewers, local chairs, and the strong support of the Steering Committee. This conference is organized under the sponsorship of ICST and CREATE-NET. We are grateful to ACM SIGMM and SIGSIM for technical cooperation. On behalf of the organizing committees of QShine 2008, we would like extend our hearty welcome to all participants to Hong Kong. We look forward to meeting you in Hong Kong at QShine 2008!
Lionel M. NI and Jiannong CAOMessage from the TPC Chairs
Welcome to the Fifth International ICST Conference on Heterogeneous Networking for Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness (QShine). Since 2004, QShine has been a very successful series of conferences providing an International forum for the discussion and sharing of new research ideas on the design and implementation of Quality of Service (QoS) in heterogeneous wireless and wireline networks.
This year, we received over 100 high quality paper submissions, out of which we have accepted 51 papers for presentation at the Conference. The Conference is organized in 17 technical sessions covering the topics of Quality of Service provisioning and resource management, QoS in peer-to-peer and overlay networks, QoS in WLAN, WPAN, and WiMAX, wireless ad hoc networks, wireless mesh networks, wireless sensor networks, cross-layer performance optimization, and security protocols in wireless networks. Besides the above traditional topics, some new and emerging research directions, such as cognitive radio networks, have also been included in this year's program. We are also quite excited to have two keynote speakers, Professor Vijay K. Bhargava and Professor Yi-Bing Lin, to enlighten us on their own perspectives on the future of Networking for Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness.
The Conference owes its success to the effort and support of many individuals. We would like to express our thanks to the General Chairs, Prof. Lionel Ni of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Prof. Jiannong Cao of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, for their kind support during preparation of the conference program. We thank Drs. Imrich Chlamtac, Yuguang (Michael) Fang and Xuemin (Sherman) Shen for their kind guidance and trust in conference preparation. We thank Dr. Xi Zhang for his efforts in publicizing the conference and Dr. Lin Cai for her great efforts to manage camera-ready paper submissions. We would like to thank the program committee members and external reviewers for their professional and timely reviews. Similar to QShine of the previous years, the reviewing process has been completed within a very short period of time. Our special thanks to the members of the Technical Program Committee and many external reviewers, without which the success of the conference would not be possible. We also would like to thank all the authors for their submissions.
Last but not the least, we would like to thank ICST for getting the technical sponsorship, organizing the submission of camera ready papers, putting together this Proceedings, and publishing all the papers electronically in the ACM digital library.
We hope that you will enjoy the presentations and discussions during QShine in Hong Kong!
Qian Zhang and Ekram Hossain
